I believe that reading's not dead. In a world where words are becoming shorter and shorter (R U rdng ths? LOL! ROFL!) I still get excited about crafting words. Preferably whole words.
I've written for many diverse clients, including Free-Reading.net, a provider of free, quality curriculum for emerging readers, and BeTurtle.com, a site dedicated to promoting environmental consciousness with articles that are actually fun to read. I've also given workshops for the Wisconsin Book Festival and led a local NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) group whose participants ranged from teenagers to senior citizens.
I work as a graphic designer at the Mount Horeb Public Library where I combine words with images to promote reading in both children and adults.
Every summer since 2002, I have helped design and create a reading curriculum that impacts hundreds of children within my community. The kids don't know they're keeping their skills polished so that they don't lose ground over their summer vacations; they think they're playing games and getting cool prizes.
I've designed a placemat full of reading puzzles and games that absorbed soda spills and hamburger grease in seven Wisconsin counties. Even adults are willing to be convinced that reading makes good use of their precious free time. You just need to slow them down long enough, often with a strange image or catchy slogan, to make them take a good look at whatever it is you're pitching.
Reading's not dead. Read on.
